Despite pumping water through seven tubewells into Sukhna Lake for over three months, the lake’s water level continues to remain the same. While the level was 1,154 feet (against the required 1,163 feet) three months ago, on Monday, too, the level continued to be 1,154 feet.
On January 16, the UT administration started supply of water from seven tubewells to fill the Sukhna, claiming that it will help the water level rise by 6-7 inches. The water was supplied for three months, which ended on March 20.
UT administration has spent Rs 12 lakh in the past three months, even reducing supply to Sector 19, 20, 26 to 30 by 2 MGD per day (1 crore litre). The water, which was supplied to the lake can cater around 70,000 people i.e. 14,000 houses.
The decision was taken after the Punjab and Haryana high court had asked the Chandigarh administration to look for solution to increase water of Sukhna Lake.
UT chief engineer Mukesh Anand had assured that the receding level of Sukhna lake could be filled by supplying water from the seven tubewells located near the lake during four months of winters.
When contacted, Anand said the water level on Monday was 1,154 feet and that the water level had reduced due to evaporation in summers, he said.
